WALKER MEMORIAL LIBRARY
WESTBROOK, MAINE

The City of Westbrook’s historic Walker Memorial Library experienced significant moisture and mold problems in the basement due to water infiltration through its foundation. To mitigate the water issues, Great Falls removed and replaced the historic slate roof, diligently protecting the original shingles from damage. A perimeter drainage system was installed to divert rain water. In addition to the roof, the library’s stone foundation and brick exterior masonry was re-pointed and repaired. Following the restoration of intricate terra cotta elements, Great Falls re-installed the granite steps and created new replica copper finials to replace the badly deteriorated originals. Corroded wood exterior elements were also reproduced, painted and installed. Copper gutters were repaired and replaced to protect the historic library and its collections against future water damage.
